Who opened the flood gates?

January 24, 2012

It happens when I chug up a hill or try to build speed on a straightaway. I think to myself, why am I using this mountain bike for my commute? I silently curse the knobby tires and swear my next project will be to outfit this bike with slicks…and then maybe a non-suspension fork…and fenders…and clipless pedals…and drop bars…and a new frame. If only I had a streamlined carbon road bike. But, your daily workhorse must be ready for anything you may face on your journey. There are times when it’s worth it to be a Jack of all trades and a master of none. When I encounter something like I did today, I remember all the reasons I made my decision.

Flood gates opened on the NW Branch Trail

Towards the end of my trip on the NW Branch Trail just south of Lane Manor Rec Center in Chillum, MD the trail dips at two drainage ditches. Normally, there is only either a trickle of water or wet sediment but on days like today, I wondered why a bridge was never built. The speed at which I charge down the slope depends of how much clean-up I’m willing to put in when I get home. This morning seemed like too much fun to hit the brakes.
